What's the deal with Mercury Retrograde & Where have I been?

Updated: Jan 28

This post covers why it's important to 'press pause' in life, what the deal is with Mercury Retrograde, what I've been up to the past few weeks, and a shiny new podcast episode on Self-Care and The Higher Self.

Boomft. I'm back!

It's been a few weeks since Handle with Care was active, and if you've been following me on Instagram, you'll know why -*internally screams Mercury Retrograde* - Indeed, I decided to tap into my inner hermit that I know so well, and allow myself the sacred time to do... nothing.

About two weeks ago, I posted this on Instagram:

It's so important to Press Pause

The mind and the body have very telling ways of letting us know that we need to slow down, and press pause. More often than not, when we ignore these signs, the universe has a way of bringing us to an abrupt halt! Relate?

'Pressing Pause' and taking time out from busy areas of your life, such as social life, creative life, hobbies, etc. allows for a time of recuperation and rethinking, for a more fruitful moving forward. Much like the Hanged Man in the tarot deck, we sometimes need to put everything on hold before taking the next step.

When we put things on hold, we create a distance between ourselves and our life circumstances; and this allows us to examine our life from different perspectives, because we have given ourselves the time and space to do so. In this way, we can gain clarity of grey areas and uncover possibilities that would of been otherwise hidden.

It also allows us time to breathe, unwind, and tap into our inner child! Adult life is so full of responsibilities, but we all have an inner child to look after too - never forget that.

So... What's the deal with Mercury Retrograde?

Not to mention that last Full Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn*laughs awkwardly because we somehow made it out alive, HAHAHA, it's over right?!*

Shout Out once again to my Instagram followers who undoubtedly saw my story rant on Mercury Retrograde, I can't remember the last time I had so many DMs! For those of you who missed the show, let me catch you up to speed:

Mercury retrograde isn’t a new thing, it’s a cycle that simply is, much like the cycle of time it takes our planet to orbit the Sun, Mercury goes retrograde cyclically. It’s effects have even been written about in astrology as far back as the mid-18th century.Yet, today’s hysteria around Mercury retrograde is stronger than ever before, but there's still zero evidence that it's something we should worry about, rather, be mindful of.

Retro-What?!

When the planet nearest to the Sun is retrograde, it appears to move ‘backwards’ (east to west rather than west to east) across the sky. But this apparent reversal in Mercury's orbit is actually an illusion to the people viewing it from Earth.

Picture Mercury and Earth circling the Sun like cars on a racetrack. A year on Mercury is shorter than a year on Earth (88 Earth days compared to 365), which means Mercury experiences four years in the time it takes us to finish one solar loop.

Example:

It’s as if you were passing a car on the motorway, travelling at a faster speed. The other car isn’t really going backwards, but it looks that way relative to your motion. Ya with me? So, yes - Mercury appears to move backward, just as the ancient astrologers perceived thousands of years ago. After a while (a three-and-a-half-week period) the planet will reverse itself and move ‘forward’ again.

Back to the motorway, Mercury is the car that speeds by like a rocket, creating a powerful, turbulent gust of ‘wind’ in its wake. The turbulence and disruption Mercury creates when it retrogrades can affect what we feel on Earth in our everyday lives.

In astrology, we tend to believe “As above, so too below.” Basically, there is a fractal relationship between the orbits in the heavens and human activity down here on Earth. This idea pervades all of astrology and is a very good concept to keep in mind.

'As above, so too below'

Mercury Rules Communication

Mercury is the ruling planet of all types of communication, from speaking and listening, to editing and researching, and selling and buying. Similarity, Mercury also rules formal contracts and agreements, like important documents, manuscripts deeds, contracts, and so forth.

Included under this planet’s domain are all types of code, including computer codes, as well as transportation, shipping, and travel. When this planet retrogrades, these areas tend to get scrambled or bit out of wack! Have you noticed this anywhere?

Last week, I felt like I was in an episode of Stranger Things travelling to Leeds. Lights were flickering like crazy in the Train Station, vending machines were causing a riot, and I’m pretty sure every Train in the region was delayed or cancelled! Sadly, I missed Billy. As if Northern Rail weren’t bad enough...

Hence, perfect timing for my past digital detox - But Why does this happen?

Go Home Mercury, You’re Drunk

When a planet retrogrades, astrologically it is in a resting or sleeping state. Therefore, while Mercury naps, the activities that it governs appear rather, drunk! Imagine trying to have a deep conversation with someone half asleep. These things don’t have the benefit of a well-functioning, wide-awake planet to supervise them.

So, if you’ve noticed some digital things on melt down, some bumpy travel routes, mixed communications and misunderstandings - relax, Mercury is just having a snooze.

Mercury Retrograde encourages you to ‘Re’ - reflect, redo, rekindle, reassess, repair, repeat, redesign, or revisit. It’s always human nature to want to hear that new opportunities are coming our way, but we really do need to focus on the quality of our life and improve it to the best it can be. Rekindle friendships, revision your future, redo your paperwork, rewrite your old drafts, rethink your decisions, repair that’s broken, you get the idea.

Don’t assume everything goes wrong during Mercury retrograde – sometimes things work in your favor. People reconsider their stance when Mercury is retrograde, and in some cases, conditions turn out to be more favorable to you than they might have been before.

Trust in the timing, and things will fall into place.

So, What have I been up to?

Well, so much for 'doing nothing' - I've actually had some major shifts the past two weeks! And I have both Mercury Retrograde and my 'pause' to thank for that.

I've been doing a lot of work on 'letting go' - releasing old negative energy patterns, and going with the flow. I've also been working through some past traumas, building my connection with my Higher Self, and interpreting my dreams. Lastly, I've been developing my tarot knowledge, and writing poetry again.

However, the highlight of my Mercury Rertograde has to be Day One, where I somehow ended up experiencing my first ever Quantum Healing Hypnosis session!

Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT), is about conducting the client into the deepest state of hypnosis, the Somnambulistic state, in which the person can access the deeper and wiser parts of the Subconscious. Yes, we're talking past lives people, karma, and connection with the Higher Self.

I'm so excited to share and explore all my insights during Mercury Retrograde in the coming weeks, and offer you some useful methods and practices to apply to your life.

To satisfy your spiritual self-care cravings until then, listen to my latest podcast episode on Self-Care and the Higher Self:

Love + Moonlight for the week ahead,

May the rest of Mercury Retrograde be bright with insight, rich in growth + positive in vibes. Remember to press pause when needed, and always, always,
